Jammu and Kashmir: Govt makes amendments to medical education rules

J&K: Governor NN Vohra has given its go-ahead to a matter of prime importance in the state medical education service recruitment rules.It has suggested amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Education (Gazetted) Service Recruitment Rules, 1979.

As a result, to reach the level of professor, a minimum of seven years of experience will be required instead of the existing experience criteria of nine years. As per this amendment, a person, before being elevated to the position of a professor, should have served as an associate professor in the subject for three years at the Government Medical College in Srinagar or Government Medical College, Jammu.

In addition, the said person should also have four research papers accepted/published to his credit in an indexed/national journal as first/second author on cumulative basis. Again, out of which, at least two research papers should be published during the candidate’s tenure as associate professor.

This development is also in lines with the requirement of MCI (as per the standard MCI norms). In an earlier report, MCI had pointed out certain deficiencies regarding the minimum teaching and research experience required for promotion of faculty members.

As reported by Tribune, the council had insisted that deviations should be met at the earliest to avoid de-affiliation of additional 100-150 seats in the two medical colleges of the state, said a Raj Bhawan spokesperson.

For the post of associate professor, a person should have served as assistant professor in the subject concerned for two years in Government Medical College, Srinagar, or Government Medical College, Jammu. He should also have two research papers accepted/published in an indexed/national journal as first/second author during his tenure as assistant professor.

Meanwhile, for the post of assistant professor, the requisite qualification is lecturer in the subject concerned for two years in Government Medical College, Srinagar, or Government Medical College, Jammu, with one research paper accepted/published in an indexed/national journal as first/second author during the candidate’s tenure as lecturer, the spokesperson added.
