The state government in Jharkhand is seeking technical help from AIIMS to upgrade its trauma facility at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) in Ranchi. As implied in the annual plan of the health department of 2015-16 fiscal, the existing 16-bed trauma infrastructure at Rims will be transformed into a 50-bed facility. The upgradation will be done at an investment worth of Rs 51.25 crore.

Since this is the only state operated trauma centre, the issue has drawn attention from health minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi during a meeting with Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre (JPN) facility of the AIIMS.

The need to upgrade trauma care facilities has been recognised by the government taking in cognizance the rising number of road accidents. At present, there are three primary trauma care units operational along the national highways in Baharagora, Bundu and Hazaribag, where the number of accidents reported is high.

The health department has further noted that due to the lack of adequate primary trauma care centres and mobile health clinic units in national and state highways, there is also a rise in the death toll of such accident victims.

Chandravanshi, was reportedly in Delhi last week for a meeting with the Centre for allowing more funds for strengthening state AYUSH directorate. At the same time, the minister sought an opportunity to meet the AIIMS professors to seek their suggestion over RIMS upgradation.

There has been a consensus reached during the meeting, where AIIMS will be helping the doctors and technicians of RIMS in handling trauma care. A round year training program has been finalized to train them by AIIMS experts.

As confirmed by TOI, experts from AIIMS will visit here while in doctors and technicians will be sent in New Delhi in batches for training," S K Choudhary, medical superintendent of Rims, who accompanied Chandravanshi to the meeting, said over the telephone on Sunday morning.

Chandravanshi's meeting with Tej Pratap Sinha, associate professor of JPN, suggested Chandravanshi to set up an internal training centre at Rims for conducting refresher courses for doctors and staff. cruitment of qualified technicians were also suggested by AIIMS faculty members. "The suggestions have been taken note of and will be implemented," the minister said.
