Kauvery Hospital in Chennai has started a dedicated stroke unit after reporting high number of stroke cases at its premise

Kauvery Hospital has witnesses a sudden rise in stroke victims reporting at its premise in Chennai. This development over the last few months led the management at the hospital to the decision of inaugurating its own acute stroke unit.

Specialising in Ortho Geriatric care and Paediatric Cardiology for elderly patients, the Kauvery Hospital recently inaugurated the dedicated unit equipped with a multi-disciplinary team of specially trained health professionals spread across Emergency Department, Neurology, Neurosurgery, General Medicine, Intensive Care, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Interventional Specialist, Physiotherapist and Nutritionist. Other specialists like Cardiologists and Nephrologists are also available round the clock to attend to the critical needs of stroke affected patients.

Dr. Prithika Chary - MBBS, MD, DM, Ph.D., MNAMS, MCh - Head of Neuroscience department, Kauvery Hospital said, "We are all set to handle any type of strokes in our new stroke unit. Identifying stroke is very crucial in ensuring prompt medicare. There are four identifying factors in stroke, abbreviated as FAST. 'F' stands for Face, where it is found to be drooping. 'A' stands for Arms (or legs), where there is weakness or numbness. 'S' stands for Speech, where difficulty in speech is experienced while 'T' stands for Time, which indicates that medical attention, must be sought immediately. FAST is an awareness programme initiated by the British government and has been hugely popular. There is an imperative need to take up this campaign to create awareness among the people."

Kauvery Hospital has dedicated and qualified professionals certified by NIHSS (A certification from the National Institute of Health, USA) to recognize and grade different types of strokes and decide the relevant type of treatment. The in-house CT scan enables a rapid and precise diagnosis and the team of competent neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuro-interventionists are then equipped to manage all types of strokes with the required medical, surgical or interventional treatment, as reported in a Press Release issued by the company.
