KGMU: Doctors Association opposes suspension of two doctors

Lucknow: Its resident doctors versus university officials at Lucknow's Prestigious King George Medical University after two junior doctors of the surgery department were suspended by the authorities for allegedly assaulting patient's attendants during a brawl here

A report in TOI states that attendants of a patient, residents of Musafir Khana (Amethi district) complained to KGMU administration that junior doctors had assaulted them when they request to discharge the patient. Junior doctors on the other hand, claimed that there was a verbal duel but no violence involved and that the action taken against them by KGMU administration was under political pressure. The attendants took their patient away later on leave against medical advice (LAMA).

Soon the complaint was followed by suspension of two resident doctors, much to the chagrin of the RDA, which alleged that the university officials were acting on political pressures and that the decision was one sided, made without even giving a fair hearing to the doctors. RDA further complained that while the officials were quick to suspend doctors on untrue allegations of patients, no action has been taken on the cases of assaults on doctors.

Calling the suspension unfair, the RDA had also given the KGMU administration time till Friday to reconsider its decision, failing which they had threatened to take the legal action against the university.

With the fresh appointment of Vice Chancellor as Prof MLB Bhatt, who took over the reigns of the university on Friday, the doctors went to meet him, seeking a reconsideration of the suspension order on two junior doctors .

"The suspension was ordered on the basis of a one-sided complaint and was totally uncalled for. Prof Bhatt has assured us of taking a call after re-evaluating the issue," said vice-president of RDA, Dr Sunil Nayak told TOI.
