New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a meeting with Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Najma Akhtar on Wednesday, came in support to set up a new medical college at the university.

Akhtar told TOI "We have been writing to the education ministry about the setting up of a medical college and now the ball is in their court. The interaction with the PM was extremely positive. He said that it will be a good move if a medical college can be set up and that he'll see what can be done. We have already sent a proposal to the ministry but they haven't responded yet. So first the government has to give the permission and then we can move ahead with the structure and other modalities."

"I expressed my wish that it should start during my tenure and he supported the same. Earlier we had also demanded a hospital, but since it is difficult to get funds and because we also realized we can tie up with an existing hospital, we are now only keen on a medical college," she added.

Jamia PRO Ahmed Azeem told in a statement that "the PM was aware of the recent achievements of the university including A++ accreditation by NAAC and he was happy about the improved performance in the last few years. He congratulated Prof Akhtar for the achievements and praised her for taking the university to new heights."

Moreover, PM asked Akhtar to work more on the educational upliftment of Muslim women and towards the effective implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The vice-chancellor assured the Prime Minister that she will work hard to meet his expectations to bring about the desired transformation of the nation.
