Lucknow: KGMU to formulate antibiotic policy to curb resistance

Lucknow: King George's Medical University is formulating an antibiotic policy for its patients to curb antiobiotic resistance.

According to Vice-chancellor, Prof Ravi Kant, the aim of the exercise is to control irrational antibiotic prescriptions from being given to patients.

Antibiotics, or antibacterials, given to destroy growth of unwanted bacteria in the body, if not taken as per  prescribed dosage can result in the recipient developing resistance to that particular antibiotic.According to the policy, doctors will now be prescribing a minimal dose of antibiotics that are necessary. This is being done to curb 'antibiotic resistance' among patients.

Antibiotic resistance according to experts is expected to be a major killer by 2050.

"In common practice, doctors prescribe high doses of antibiotics or multiple ones to make sure the patient gets cover from all possible infections. But in this attempt, resistance develops in the patient, which can be fatal in the coming years,"  said Prof. Ravi Kant. The new enactment it is believed will benefit a majority of patients.
