THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With admission process to the medical colleges nearing, the state government can heave a sigh of relief with the Medical Council of India (MCI) giving permission for admission to the seats at the new medical colleges at Idukki, Manjeri and Palakkad. However, the MCI has given strict direction that all the deficiencies in faculty and infrastructure should be addressed within three months.

The MCI gave the permission after the Health Secretary gave an undertaking that all the shortcomings pointed out by the MCI will be addressed within the time period, MCI member and Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) Dr K Mohanan told Express.

“As of now there is nothing to worry with regard to the seats in the medical  Colleges of Idukki, Manjeri and Palakkad. But if the deficiencies are not addressed, then the MCI will have no option but to cancel the approval,” he said.  Apart from giving recognition to the seats in the three medical colleges, the MCI has also given the nod for the renewal of permission for increasing seats in Alappuzha and Kozhikode Medical Colleges. With this, Manjeri and  Palakkad Medical Colleges will be getting 100 seats each and Idukki 50 seats.

The MCI had inspected the medical colleges last month. The recognition for the seats was given to the three medical colleges taking them as a special case. However, Mohanan said that no decision was taken as far as the private medical colleges are concerned.

Though the MCI has given recognition to the seats with a rider of three months, sources said that the situation after three months in the three colleges is going to be the same as that of today. “It should be noted that the MCI had last year given permission for starting the MBBS batches in the three new medical colleges after the government gave an undertaking that everything will be rectified within a year. The same situation prevails now and it is doubtful if all the deficiencies could be rectified within the time period the MCI had given,” highly placed sources said.

There were reports that only half of the faculty members have been appointed in the new medical colleges.
