New Delhi: Nurses and their organizations continue to face exceptional levels of demands stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Mckinsey November 2021 Frontline Workforce Survey, a massive 32% of the surveyed Registered Nurses (RNs) said they may leave their current direct-patient-care role. The strongest drivers of intent to leave included insufficient staffing levels, seeking higher pay, not feeling listened to or supported at work and the emotional toll of the job.

Against this compelling context, LearningSol has developed the Essential Skills for Nurses virtual learning experience to empower frontline caregivers with skills aimed at improving not just their salary prospects but also building coping strategies, preventing burnout and improving their personal well-being.

In the market research and needs analysis conducted for LearningSol by the student team of the Post Graduate Program, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, the following insights came to the fore.

1. There is a requirement of preparing nurses to be made patient ready with practical, scenario-based training. There is a gap between academics and the industry and a majority of the fresh nursing pass-outs are not job-ready.

2. Indian hospitals have inappropriate pay scales for nurses. This is one of the reasons why there is a stigma attached to taking it up as a profession and the younger generation is not keen on joining the workforce.

3. Nurses bear the brunt of long work hours, demanding nature of work, and frequent rude behaviour from care receivers. Consequently, they get burned out and experience compassion fatigue.

4. Language barrier leads to reduced quality of care and needs to be addressed promptly to improve healthcare service delivery.

The company's founder and CEO, Ankita Pandey, who is an instructional design expert, had this to say about the program. "With the Essential Skills for Nurses learning experience, LearningSol intends to help the nursing workforce to improve job prospects, professional satisfaction and quality of life. Over time, their goal is to address widespread staffing shortages, and assisting healthcare leaders in designing and deploying strategies focused on supporting their workforce and improving healthcare services in India," Ankita said
