Over 29,000 PG Medical Seats Increased Since 2020: MoS Health

A total of 29,080 postgraduate medical seats have been added across medical colleges from the Academic Year 2020-21 to 2025-26, the Union Health Minister Anupriya Patel informed the Lok Sabha.

In a written reply, Minister Patel said that, as per information provided by the National Medical Commission (NMC), there has been a steady rise in the PG seats over the past six years.

NMC Issues Guidelines Against Use of ‘Fake Patient’ During College Inspections

Noting that some medical colleges are indulging in admitting fake patients to fulfil the requirement of bed occupancy, investigations, etc, the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued strict guidelines to identify and act against the practice of 'fake patients' in medical colleges during inspections.

While inviting applications for the Establishment of a New Medical College or institution intending to offer MBBS courses and increase the number of UG seats in an established Medical College or Institution for the Academic year (AY) 2026-2027, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) mentioned that, if any accessor detects fake patient during inspection then it may lead to ban on starting new courses or increasing seats for a certain period including penalty.

Karnataka Govt Mandates 10-Year Service In Specific Department for DNB, Diploma Courses

The Health and Family Welfare Department has introduced revised guidelines on higher education rules for doctors mandating long-term service commitments and strict compliance.

As per the new rules, doctors who choose to pursue postgraduate courses such as DNB or diploma programmes must serve in the specific department for at least 10 years. They will also have to submit a written undertaking before starting the course.

Telangana HC Seeks State Response Over Internship Stipend, NMC Norm Violations

The Telangana High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of complaints alleging the non-payment and illegal deduction of stipends to medical interns across the State.

The decision was taken after the Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh received a series of emails regarding the matter. Based on the emails, the Chief Justice converted the correspondence into a Public Interest Litigation.
