Doctor ordered to pay Rs 5 lakh for not considering cardio opinion before surgery
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) recently directed a consultant surgeon at a Erode-based hospital to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of the patient, who died while undergoing treatment for Colon cancer. Although the Commission noted that there was no medical negligence during the surgery conducted on the patient, it ordered the treating doctor to pay compensation after noting that there was no material on record to show that proper cardio opinion was secured before the surgery.

The history of the case goes back to 2014 when the patient was diagnosed with Grade-II piles and colonoscopy revealed that there was cancer growth in the upper rectum. Consequently, the Histopathology report indicated Adenocarcinoma of Colon Grade-II. For this, the treating doctor at the treating hospital had advised for removal of the tumour by way of Anterior Resection of Colon & Upper Rectum and Staple Anastomosis.

SC slams Uttarakhand health DG over ICU, CCU guidelines
During the case proceedings concerning guidelines for admission to the Intensive Care Unit and Critical Care Unit, the Supreme Court recently slammed Uttarakhand's Director General of Health for filing an affidavit that proposed changes to a July 23 order of the top court that directed the States to give suggestions on guidelines governing the functioning of ICUs and CCUs across the country.

While considering the matter, the Apex Court bench took note of the affidavit filed by the DG, Tara Arya, and sought details of the meeting where the decision to suggest changes to the Court order was taken, HT has reported.

Doctors urge NMC to simplify NMR registration process amid confusion
Facing troubles in the process of registration in the National Medical Register (NMR), the doctors have urged the authorities concerned to simplify the process by automatically converting the State registration into national registration by the Central Government.

This comes after doctors across the country alleged that they were facing a mismatch regarding the details of the Aadhar card, State medical board registration including spellings of names and surnames, etc.

TN nurse attacked and assaulted by youth on her way home after hospital shift
After completing her duties at the Orathur Primary Health Centre in Lalgudi block, a 45-year-old nurse was followed by a 25-year-old youth who allegedly attacked and sexually assaulted her while she was returning home. She is currently undergoing treatment after sustaining severe injuries from the assault.

The incident took place on October 31st evening when the nurse was on her way home after completing her duties at the hospital. It was at the same time, that the accused was following her and sexually assaulted her about two kilometres from the health centre.
