Negligence in intracranial stenting, hospital fined Rs 16 lakh
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Kanchipuram recently directed a private hospital and its consultant doctor to pay Rs 16.36 lakh as compensation to the patient, who suffered a paralytic stroke after undergoing a Right Middle Cerebral Artery (M1 Segment) Intracranial Stenting.
It was observed by the consumer court that the consultant doctor, who conducted the procedure, did not have requisite qualifications. Further, the Commission held the treating hospital- Gleneagles Global Health City negligent for engaging the doctor without verifying his qualifications. Apart from this, deficiencies and discrepancies were noted in consent forms, progress notes etc.

The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of the pleas seeking re-conduction of the NEET-UG 2024 exam after noting that some of the parties had not received the latest affidavits filed by the Central Government and the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Deferring the hearing, the Apex Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud has listed the matter for further hearing on July 18 i.e. next Thursday.

NEET 2024 Hearing In Supreme Court Deferred To July 18
The World Health Organization (WHO) has prequalified the first self-test for hepatitis C virus (HCV), the GFX: OraQuick HCV self-test by OraSure Technologies This advancement aimed to expand access to HCV testing and diagnosis, accelerating global efforts to eliminate hepatitis C.(6) The self-test is an extension of the OraQuick HCV Rapid Antibody Test, prequalified for professional use in 2017, and is designed for lay users.
The WHO recommended HCV self-testing in 2021 to complement existing services, based on evidence of its effectiveness in increasing access and uptake, particularly among those less likely to test otherwise.
Cholera Outbreak: Rajkot and Jamnagar regions affected
Several areas in Rajkot and Jamnagar have been declared cholera-affected following the confirmation of positive cases on Thursday. In Rajkot, a six-year-old boy from the Lohanagar railway crossing on Gondal Road was diagnosed with cholera.(9) Additionally, six other individuals experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting are currently undergoing treatment.
The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) identified contaminated water in a house water tank as the potential source of infection. RMC staff conducted a comprehensive survey of 448 houses in the vicinity, examining over 1,700 residents. All patients are receiving treatment at home.(10) The RMC health team has also provided guidance on maintaining hygiene and distributed chlorine tablets to prevent further infections.
