Procuring Rs 650 Remdesivir at Rs 1568 during pandemic: FIR against pharma company Mylan for alleged Rs 6 crore fraud

The City's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Mylan Laboratories and other parties for supplying BMC with Remdesivir vials at an inflated price during the COVID pandemic, resulting in a loss of Rs 5.96 crore.

Due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the city in 2021, BMC had issued tenders to acquire antiviral drug Remdesivir injections. In the initial tender given to Mylan Laboratories, they were supposed to provide 40,000 vials at a rate of Rs 650 per vial but only delivered 31,000 vials.

Subsequently, a second tender was awarded to the same company for 2 lakh vials, but this time the cost per vial was Rs 1,568, and the gap between the two orders was just two weeks. However, only 65,000 vials were received in the second order. The EOW is currently investigating the missing vials and the total payment made to the supplier. Additionally, they are looking into the significant price difference within such a short timeframe.
