Chandipura virus: More than 32 dead in worst outbreak in over 20 years
The worst outbreak of the Chandipura virus in over 20 years has killed at least 32 people, primarily children and teenagers, in India over the past month. The poorly understood disease, known to jump from insects to humans only in India, has infected more than 80 people in Gujarat, with additional cases in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Part of the same virus family as Rabies, Chandipura is mainly transmitted by sandflies, but also by mosquitoes and ticks. It predominantly affects those under 15, with symptoms ranging from fever and headache to encephalitis, convulsions, seizures, coma, and death. The current death rate is estimated at 76%, though many asymptomatic cases likely reduce the actual fatality rate.
CIC gives deadline to NMC to make medical college assessment reports public
Reiterating its earlier stand, the Central Information Commission (CIC) has once again directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to regularly upload the assessment reports of all the medical colleges on the NMC website, in compliance with the provisions of Section 4 of the RTI Act to boost transparency and in the larger public interest concerning the quality of medical education in the country. With this, the CIC has given a deadline to the apex medical commission.
However, CIC clarified that the NMC needs to ensure that these reports are uploaded after taking into consideration the exemptions listed under section 8 (1) and Section 9 of the RTI Act.

Union Budget 2024: Health ministry receives Rs 90,958.63 crore allocation
In the 2024-2025 Union Budget, the Union Health Ministry has been allocated Rs 90,958.63 crore, an increase of 12.96 per cent over the Rs 80,517.62 crore 2023-24 revised estimates.
Further, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who tabled the Union Budget 2024-2025 today i.e. on July 23, 2024, announced Custom Duty exemptions on three cancer treatment drugs- Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib and Durvalumab.

NEET UG 2024: Supreme Court dismisses pleas for re-examination
Putting an end to the ongoing litigations regarding the National Eligibility-and-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 Examination, the Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra today dismissed the pleas seeking the re-conduction of the NEET UG 2024 examination due to the allegations of paper leak.
Observing that there was no systemic breach for scrapping the entire exam held on May 5th, 2024, the top court bench clarified that there would be no re-exam of NEET.
