Low NEET Marks? Check Government Medical Colleges and Expected Cutoffs
Following the NEET UG 2026 re-examination held on June 21, candidates are now focusing on counselling and admission opportunities. While securing a seat in top medical institutions can be difficult with a lower NEET score, several government medical colleges have historically admitted students at comparatively higher closing ranks, offering hope to eligible candidates. A low NEET score generally refers to marks that fall short of the cutoffs for highly competitive institutions. However, candidates who meet the qualifying cutoff remain eligible to participate in counselling rounds. Last year, the qualifying score was 144 for the General/EWS category and 113 for OBC, SC and ST candidates, according to an NDTV report.
Based on previous admission trends, government medical colleges such as AIIMS Madurai, Government Medical College Amritsar, Government Medical College Latur, Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Jagdalpur Medical College, Government Medical College Pali, Government Medical College Firozabad and Agartala Government Medical College admitted candidates at relatively higher ranks. Students with lower NEET scores can also explore alternative healthcare courses including BSc Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiology, Optometry, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BPharma and DPharma. Experts advise participating in all counselling rounds, as cutoff trends may vary and additional opportunities often emerge in later rounds.
NHRC Seeks Action Taken Report Over Alleged Obscene Cadaver Videos
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B Ministry) after receiving a complaint from a doctors' body regarding alleged obscene and insensitive digital content involving human cadavers.
In a communication on June 23, 2026, the complaint submitted by Dr. Lakshya Mittal, Chairperson of the United Doctors Front (UDF), was placed before the Commission on the same day.
