Report Highlights Growing Concerns Over Student Suicides Linked to NEET Pressure
Approximately 93 aspirants reportedly died by suicide in cases linked to the NEET over the last five years, according to an analysis of media reports by India Today.
The analysis found that 2025 recorded the highest number of such reported deaths, while 2026 has already seen at least 14 cases so far.
The year-wise data showed a steady rise in reported NEET-linked student suicides. At least four cases were reported in 2021, nine in 2022, 14 in 2023, 19 in 2024, and 32 in 2025. In 2026, at least 14 such cases have already been reported, including five after the announcement of the exam cancellation on May 12.

NEET 2026 Paper Leak: CBI Arrests Latur Paediatrician, Physics Tutor
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two more accused, including a Latur-based paediatrician and a Physics tutor from a coaching centre in NEET UG 2026 Examination paper leak case.
The accused, a Latur based doctor has been arrested for allegedly playing a key role in facilitating three students, including the son of an accused coaching centre owner in getting the Chemistry questions from the accused Kulkarni, retired Chemistry teacher.

FMGs Get Relief as NMC Extends Non-Teaching Hospital Internship Permission Till 2028
In a major relief for thousands of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) across India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has extended permission for Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) in recognised non-teaching hospitals till May 2028. The earlier approval was valid only till May 2026. The decision comes after repeated requests from several state governments, Directors of Medical Education and State Medical Councils facing severe shortages of internship seats for FMGs. The move is expected to benefit students awaiting internship allotments in states where teaching hospitals lack sufficient capacity.
The extension follows growing concerns raised by FMGs over delays in internship approvals, seat allocation and communication gaps between State Medical Councils and the NMC. During a recent meeting with FMG representatives, NMC officials reportedly acknowledged that many councils were sending queries only to the Undergraduate Medical Education Board, causing delays in responses, according to TOI.
Officials advised State Medical Councils to include the NMC Secretary’s office in all communications related to FMG matters for faster resolution. FMG associations welcomed the decision, stating that it would significantly ease the internship crisis in states such as West Bengal, Assam, Rajasthan and Delhi, where many graduates have been waiting months for internship opportunities and medical registration.
India Intensifies Screening at Airports Amid Suspected Ebola Cases
India has intensified airport screening, traveller monitoring and quarantine protocols after suspected Ebola cases were reported in Bengaluru and Gujarat, although health authorities have confirmed that no Ebola infection has been detected in the country so far. A 28-year-old Ugandan woman isolated in Bengaluru over suspected Ebola symptoms has tested negative, providing relief amid concerns over the ongoing outbreak in parts of Africa.
Officials said Airport Health Organisation teams are directly monitoring passengers arriving from affected countries, and even travellers with mild symptoms such as a headache are being isolated as a precaution. Samples are being sent to the National Institute of Virology for testing, reports TOI.
Meanwhile, authorities in Gujarat are awaiting test results of a 37-year-old man who reportedly travelled from Africa and Bangladesh before arriving in Vadodara via Mumbai. The man developed fever, cough and cold symptoms and was shifted to an isolation ward after his travel history emerged during screening. Health officials said the patient, his two associates and a doctor who treated him have been placed under observation. The Union Health Ministry stated that surveillance at airports and hospitals has been intensified, and all screening, testing and quarantine measures are being carried out according to WHO guidelines.
