According to central government policy, assistant professors who are senior to senior residents get salaries that are significantly lower than those of senior regents.

While Senior Residents received combined pay of Rs 1,15,300 per month from Senior Residents, Associate Professors were awarded Rs 95,000. As they do not receive fair pay, leave, or other benefits or even teaching experience, Assistant Professors employed on a contractual basis feel demotivated from entering into Medical Academia.

This is further marred by delayed permanent. recruitment. A doctor may seek either contractual or permanent assistant professor positions after finishing senior residency. However, the most recent faculty hiring took place in 2019. As a result, Most doctors hired by the government are on a contractual basis to alleviate the scarcity of assistant professors. These doctors receive a lower income, no medical benefits, regular leaves, D.A., or health insurance despite their seniority. Even MBBS graduates appointed as Junior Residents (JRs) receive salaries comparable to those of temporary positions.

For discussing this issue, in today's Medical Dialogues health perspectives episode, we have Dr. Aakash Tomar an AP at ESI-PGIMSR in New Delhi, and Dr. Ganesh Kumar Meena an MD psychiatrist at the junior resident department of psychiatry at Safdarjung hospital.
