AIIMS Introduces AI-Powered Smart Glasses to Assist Visually Impaired Students

In a significant step towards inclusive education and assistive healthcare, All India Institute of Medical Sciences has introduced AI-enabled smart vision glasses for visually impaired students across the Delhi-NCR region. The initiative has been launched through the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences in collaboration with Rotary members, with the aim of improving accessibility, independence and educational support for students with visual disabilities.

The wearable smart glasses use artificial intelligence to convert visual information into audio instructions, enabling users to read text, recognise objects, identify currency notes and navigate public spaces more confidently, according to Millennium Post.

Officials associated with the programme said nearly 1,700 visually impaired students are expected to benefit in phases. The devices are being distributed only after medical evaluation and orientation sessions to help students adapt to the technology effectively. Doctors at the ophthalmic sciences centre said the initiative could significantly improve mobility, learning opportunities and social inclusion for visually impaired students. AIIMS officials also noted that the long-term impact of the technology on rehabilitation and education outcomes will be closely studied.
