Recently, Alaska health authorities announced the state's first fatality due to this newly identified viral disease, marking a concerning development. An elderly man with a compromised immune system, residing on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, succumbed to Alaskapox in late January while receiving medical treatment. This case is notably rare, being just one of seven reported infections of Alaskapox, according to the Alaska Department of Public Health.
