Eight cases of Monkeypox in India, one death

Eight cases of monkeypox have been reported in India with one-related death. While Delhi has reported another case of Monkeypox which is the third case of the viral disease in the national capital so far. The country has set up national task force to monitor the development of vaccines and diagnostics against the disease.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.
