World Health Organization updates list of drug-resistant bacteria most threatening to human health
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its updated Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (BPPL) for 2024, highlighting 15 families of antibiotic-resistant bacteria categorized into critical, high, and medium priorities. This update aims to guide the development of new treatments to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
AMR is a growing global health threat, exacerbated by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, leading to ineffective treatments and increased illness and mortality rates. Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for AMR, emphasized the list's importance in addressing the antibiotic pipeline crisis and guiding investments.
