Study Links Low Vitamin D to Cognitive Decline in Adults Over 85 With Diabetes

Adults aged 85 and older with type 2 diabetes who had both depressive symptoms and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were found to have the lowest vitamin D levels in a new study published in Scientific Reports. While the findings do not prove cause and effect, they suggest vitamin D may be linked to both mood and brain health in very old adults.
Researchers evaluated 188 adults with type 2 diabetes, with an average age of 87 years. Participants underwent blood tests to measure serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, along with detailed cognitive and depression assessments using standardized screening tools.
The participants were divided into four groups: those with depressive symptoms alone, mild cognitive impairment alone, both conditions, and a comparison group with neither condition.
The results showed that people with both depression and mild cognitive impairment had the lowest average vitamin D levels, while those without either condition had the highest levels.
Further analysis found that lower vitamin D levels were linked to worse depression scores, poorer cognitive performance, and higher blood sugar levels measured by HbA1c.
Even after adjusting for age, education, diabetes duration, and other medical conditions, lower vitamin D remained independently associated with having both depressive symptoms and mild cognitive impairment. According to the researchers, every 1 ng/mL increase in vitamin D was associated with about a 23% lower likelihood of having both conditions.
However, the researchers stress that this was an observational study, meaning it cannot determine whether low vitamin D contributes to these conditions or simply reflects poorer overall health. Larger long-term studies and clinical trials are needed before vitamin D supplementation can be recommended as a strategy to prevent or treat depression or cognitive decline in older adults with diabetes.

Scientists Identify Supplement That May Improve Immune Response to Cancer and Viruses

A naturally occurring amino acid called arginine may help the immune system recognize cancer cells and viruses more effectively, according to a new study published in Cell.
Arginine is produced naturally by the body and is also found in protein-rich foods. Researchers from Rockefeller University discovered that when arginine levels fall, immune defenses become weaker because cells struggle to produce major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) proteins. These proteins act like "ID cards," displaying abnormal or viral proteins on the cell surface so immune T cells can detect and destroy dangerous cells.
To understand the effect, scientists examined models of colon cancer, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2. They found that arginine was consistently the most depleted amino acid across all three conditions.
Further laboratory experiments revealed that low arginine caused ribosomes—the cell's protein-making machinery—to stall while producing MHC-I proteins. As a result, fewer immune warning signals appeared on cell surfaces, allowing cancer cells and viruses to evade immune detection more easily.
The team then tested the findings in mice. Animals fed a low-arginine diet developed more colon tumors, whereas mice receiving more arginine developed fewer tumors. In influenza and SARS-CoV-2 models, an arginine-rich diet reduced disease severity. Remarkably, giving arginine after influenza infection also improved outcomes.
Researchers also found that moderate arginine supplementation, roughly equivalent to the amount found in a couple of over-the-counter tablets, restored genes involved in MHC-I production in laboratory experiments.
The scientists suggest that arginine supplementation could eventually be explored alongside immunotherapy or antiviral treatments because it is inexpensive and widely available. However, they caution that these findings are based on preclinical studies, and human clinical trials are still needed before recommending arginine supplements for cancer prevention or treatment of viral infections.

Daily Avocado Consumption Linked to Reduced Heart Disease Risk: Study

Eating just one avocado a day may modestly improve heart health in adults with obesity by lowering harmful cholesterol-carrying particles, according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.
Researchers from Penn State found that daily avocado consumption reduced the concentration of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the blood. Unlike standard LDL cholesterol tests, LDL particle count provides a more detailed picture of cardiovascular risk because these particles transport cholesterol through the bloodstream. A higher number of LDL particles, particularly smaller ones, increases the likelihood of plaque building up inside arteries.
The study analyzed data from 786 adults enrolled in the six-month Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial. Participants had abdominal obesity, with men having a waist circumference above 40 inches and women above 35 inches. Half of the participants continued their usual diet and lifestyle, while the other half also maintained their normal routines but added one avocado every day.
By the end of the study, those eating a daily avocado showed a reduction of 49 nanomoles per liter in LDL particle concentration, a change researchers estimated could translate into about a 4% lower risk of heart disease.
However, eating an avocado every day did not reduce body weight or waist circumference, confirming that its benefits were linked to cholesterol-related changes rather than weight loss.
Researchers say the findings demonstrate that even a simple dietary change can improve one marker of cardiovascular health under real-world conditions, without requiring people to overhaul their entire diet.
While the reduction in heart disease risk was modest compared with broader healthy eating patterns, the team believes adding an avocado to a balanced diet could be a practical first step for adults with obesity looking to improve heart health. They recommend consulting a healthcare professional before making major dietary changes.
