New Research Reveals Blood Test That Could Identify Multiple Cancers Early
What if one blood test could act like a health radar for your whole body?
UCLA researchers have developed a promising blood-based test that could potentially detect multiple cancers, liver diseases and signs of organ damage at the same time. The approach, called MethylScan, examines tiny fragments of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) circulating in the bloodstream and looks for chemical patterns that reveal where those DNA fragments came from.
Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study builds on a simple idea: as cells throughout the body die, they release DNA into the blood. Because different tissues carry distinctive DNA methylation patterns, these fragments can provide clues about the health of specific organs.
Unlike many liquid biopsies that primarily search for cancer-associated mutations, MethylScan focuses on methylation—the chemical tagging of DNA that helps regulate gene activity. Researchers developed a method to remove large amounts of normal blood-cell DNA, which otherwise overwhelms the much rarer signals from tumors or damaged organs.
The team tested the approach using blood samples from 1,061 people, including patients with liver, lung, ovarian and stomach cancers, various liver diseases, benign lung nodules and healthy participants.
At 98% specificity, MethylScan detected about 63% of cancers overall, including roughly 55% of early-stage cancers. Among people at high risk of liver cancer, the test identified nearly 80% of cases at slightly above 90% specificity.
Intriguingly, the methylation patterns could also help identify the tissue of origin, potentially guiding doctors toward the organ requiring follow-up imaging or testing. The test distinguished several liver conditions with about 85% accuracy, suggesting a possible future role in reducing the need for invasive biopsies in some situations.
But this is not yet a universal cancer test. Larger prospective studies are needed to determine whether MethylScan can reliably detect disease in real-world screening populations.

Study Links Endometriosis to 46% Higher Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
A condition best known for painful periods may be linked to a risk that starts far beyond reproductive health. A new study suggests women with endometriosis may face a 46% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with women without the condition.
Published in Diabetologia, the research found that endometriosis was associated with a 46% greater risk of type 2 diabetes. Importantly, the strength of the association differed depending on the type and location of endometriosis.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus and can cause severe pelvic pain, painful periods and fertility problems. But researchers say its potential effects may extend to metabolic health as well.
The study, led by researchers at George Mason University in the US, analysed health data from nearly 3 million women in the Utah Population Database between 1996 and 2021. Nearly 100,000 participants had been diagnosed with endometriosis.
The link was particularly strong among women with extra-pelvic endometriosis, where lesions occur outside the pelvic region. Researchers also found stronger associations among premenopausal women and women without obesity—groups that are not traditionally viewed as having the highest risk for type 2 diabetes.
One possible explanation is chronic inflammation. Endometriosis is associated with persistent inflammatory activity, which could potentially contribute to insulin resistance and other metabolic changes. However, the study found an association rather than proving that endometriosis directly causes diabetes.
Previous research often treated endometriosis as a single condition and found little or no overall connection with type 2 diabetes. The new findings suggest that looking at specific forms of the disease may reveal risks that were previously overlooked.
If future studies confirm the association, the findings could help doctors identify women with certain forms of endometriosis who may benefit from earlier diabetes-risk assessment and prevention strategies.

High Ultra-Processed Food Consumption Associated With Increased Prostate Cancer Risk in Men: Study
Your snack drawer may be serving more than just convenience. A new study suggests it could also be linked to prostate cancer risk. Men who consume higher amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) may have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer, according to new research from Florida Atlantic University.
Published in The American Journal of Medicine, the study analysed dietary and health data from 17,024 U.S. men aged 18 and older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2023.
Researchers used two 24-hour dietary recalls to estimate how much of participants’ daily energy came from UPFs, including products such as soft drinks, packaged cereals, snacks and processed meats. Participants were then divided into four groups based on UPF intake, ranging from less than about 20% of calories to more than 44%.
The findings showed that men in the three higher UPF-consumption groups had a 29% higher risk of prostate cancer compared with those in the lowest-intake group. The two highest-consumption groups had about a 30% higher risk. Even after accounting for factors including age, race and ethnicity, smoking and poverty status, the increased risk remained, ranging from 24% to 31%.
Men with the very highest UPF intake appeared to have a 34% higher risk, although this result was not statistically significant.
Researchers say several mechanisms could potentially explain the association. UPFs have been linked with metabolic disruption, inflammation, oxidative stress and changes in the gut microbiome, all of which could potentially influence cancer-related pathways.
However, the study does not prove that UPFs cause prostate cancer. It was observational and relied on dietary recalls, which can be imperfect. More large-scale studies and randomized trials are needed.
With prostate cancer affecting nearly 1.5 million men globally each year, the researchers say reducing reliance on heavily processed foods and improving access to affordable, nutritious alternatives could form part of broader cancer-prevention strategies.
