A review that is going to be published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reports characterization of bacterial composition of gynecological Surgical site infection to help inform prophylactic antibiotic choices. The review says among 10,495 gynecologic surgeries performed during the ten-year span,1.8% Surgical site infection were diagnosed out of which 74% occurred in cases that involved 84 hysterectomies, (8 vaginal, 134 abdominal) and 82% of Surgical site infection occurred among 85 patients with suspected preoperative gynecologic malignancies.

Surgical site infection is a serious cause of mortality post surgery worldwide. It characterized as it occurs within 30 days of an operation, superficially at the incision site, deeply at the incision site, or in organ and deep spaces accessed during the operation. Surgical site infection are the most common complication of gynecological surgeries and can result in significant morbidity.
