A new study published in JMIR Serious Games suggests that certain types of video games may offer benefits beyond entertainment, potentially helping adults feel less lonely and become more emotionally resilient.

Researchers surveyed 2,252 adults aged 21 years and older about their gaming habits, emotional outlook, and feelings of loneliness. The findings showed that people who regularly played exploration-based adventure games and light-hearted, relaxing games reported lower levels of loneliness compared with non-gamers. These players also scored higher on measures of stoicism, a psychological trait associated with emotional resilience, self-control, and the ability to cope calmly with challenges.

According to the researchers, different gaming experiences may provide complementary emotional benefits. Exploration-focused games often encourage persistence, problem-solving, and overcoming obstacles, while more accessible and enjoyable games can promote relaxation and positive emotions. Together, these experiences may contribute to a balanced "digital diet" that supports mental well-being.

The study challenges the common perception that gaming is simply a form of escapism. Instead, it suggests that some games may help individuals develop valuable psychological skills, including perseverance, emotional regulation, and recovery from setbacks.

Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a major public health concern linked to poorer mental and physical health outcomes. While the researchers emphasize that video games should not be viewed as a substitute for professional mental health care, the findings indicate that certain gaming experiences could serve as affordable and accessible tools to support emotional well-being.

The authors note that more research is needed to establish cause-and-effect relationships. However, the results highlight the potential role of interactive digital experiences in helping people manage loneliness and build resilience, offering a new perspective on how gaming may contribute to overall mental health.
