New Delhi: A gross medical negligence case has surfaced at Sushruta Trauma Centre, a Trauma care facility run by the Delhi government where a surgeon allegedly operated upon the leg of a patient who sustained minor head injury.

The patient, Vijendra Tyagi, was admitted to the trauma center with minor injuries on his head and face that he sustained in an accident. Confusing him with another patient, Virendra who was admitted in the same ward with a fractured leg, the surgeon took Tyagi to the operation theatre.

After the operation, Vijendra’s son, Ankit Tyagi spotted the blunder and informed the hospital authorities. “The surgeon drilled a small hole into my father’s right leg to put a pin. It was done under anesthesia so he didn’t even realize the mistake or raise an alarm,” he alleged while speaking to TOI.

A senior doctor at the centre explained the procedure and said that insertion of pin into fractured leg is a minor procedure that is conducted under local anaesthesia.

The patient's son has claimed that his father still suffers from a headache and pain in the chest where there was injury, but due to the needless procedure, he is also now unable to walk.

Confirming the hospital’s action on the matter, Dr Bahl, the Medical Superintendent of Sushrut Trauma Centre told TOI that a committee which was constituted to look into the matter found merit in the allegations and a disciplinary action has been initiated against the doctor who is a senior resident at the hospital.

“The doctor has been barred from conducting surgeries without supervision with immediate effect,” informed Dr Bahl. He added that such negligence will not be tolerated any further.

The family has, however, decided not to pursue or seek legal recourse against the doctor.
