Glucosamine intake for one year reduces all cause mortality by 39 percent: Study
Glucosamine supplements may reduce the risk of cardiovascular-related death--and death overall--according to a new epidemiological study from WVU. The study, led by School of Medicine researcher Dana King, found that taking glucosamine/chondroitin supplements daily was associated with a 65 percent reduction in cardiovascular-related mortality and a 39 percent reduction in deaths overall.

Researchers at West Virginia University have found in a new epidemiological study that Glucosamine supplements may reduce overall mortality about as well as regular exercise does.Regular consumption of Glucosamine for one year reduces all cause mortality by 39 percent.It was also associated with a 65 percent reduction in cardiovascular-related deaths.
The results of study appear in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine.
Glucosamine with chondroitin is a widely used combination supplement used to treat osteoarthritis and joint pain and it is available without a prescription in the United States. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are natural compounds found in cartilage, and can take as a dietary supplement to treat osteoarthritis and joint pain. Several large clinical trials have compared glucosamine/chondroitin to either placebo or celecoxib but have not demonstrated significant improvement in arthritis pain.
