After the falling business of its flagship drug Rebif, used for multiple sclerosis, Merck KGaA is now betting its fortunes on its oncology business to reverse the situation.
The company is now in the stage of a rapid evolution considering the 80% focus on the oncology and immune-oncology drug business, as implied by the company spekesperson.
Rebif has taken a slow dip in the market as there is an increases competition from a new generation of oral drugs.
Amidst the growing participation from the company's workers in the R&D, the company is optimistic on its fortunes any time soon. At the forefront of the cancer research is the drug, avelumab , a treatment that harnesses the power of immune system.
In addition to Rebif and cancer drug Erbitux, which were partially developed in Israel and already on the market, "we finally have activity in innovation in terms of new products coming in the pipeline," Luciano Rossetti, head of global research and development at Merck's biopharma business Merck Seronotold Reuters during a visit to Israel.
