Hyderabad: Normally allegations of medical negligence initiate tiffs at the hospitals, but in a recent case at Gandhi hospital, shifting a patient to a concerned ward led to an altercation and an unpleasant situation.

The mob tried to abuse, physically attack and assault two female postgraduate doctors over transferring a patient to ICU. Their attempt was thwarted by security men who intervened and saved an ugly situation.

The incident relates to a patient who was moved to the hospital by a mob after she fell down from a building and suffered multiple injuries. Analyzing her condition, the patient was kept on a ventilator and junior doctors decided to shift her to orthopaedics department’s emergency ward. The mob including relatives of patient demanded that patient to be shifted to ICU instead.

“However, they demanded the patient be shifted to ICU and started to verbally abuse us. Though security personnel intervened, the mob was uncontrollable. We lodged a complaint with police,”  one of the junior doctors who was attacked, confirmed to The New Indian Express.

In the complaint, the junior doctor said that while the mob tried to physically attack them, their attempt was prevented by timely action by security personnel. The patient died after the incident.

After lodging the complaint against the attackers, a case was registered with Chilkalguda Police under IPC Sections 353 (Assault or Criminal Force to deter public servant from performing duty), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Meanwhile, a day after the attack, doctors demanded that security at the hospital must be enhanced to ensure the safety of doctors and staff attending to patients.
