Mumbai: A 32-year old doctor associated with a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC)-run hospital has been arrested by Vashi police on account of alleged sexual harassment at workplace of a 25-year old intern.

The accused doctor was posted as a senior resident doctor at the civic hospital for the last six months. Earlier, he had worked at the same medical college in Navi Mumbai where the complainant intern is a student.

The medical student from Terna medical college, Nerul joined the civic hospital for a one-month internship. She alleged that the doctor had molested her by taking her for a walk in a nearby jogger's park.

The intern further alleged that the accused offered her beer which she refused to take. He consumed the beer alone and tried to kiss her. Feeling offended, the complainant returned to NMMC hospital.

He allegedly tried to abduct her in the park first and then in the hospital premises and touched her inappropriately when she was working in the night shift.

Following the alleged incident, she had lodged a complaint with the Terna medical college administration alleging sexual harassment at workplace. Further, the intern lodged a complaint at the Vashi police station against the doctor. He was booked under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment) and 354D (stalking) of the IPC.

Following the complaint, the police had arrested the accused doctor from Narul.

The police conducted an inquiry on the matter. The Sub Inspector Sarita Musale, Vashi police station told the HT, "Once we are done, we will apply for cancellation of the accused's licence."

The Sub Inspector further informed that he was produced before the court but now he is out on bail.

"The court initially remanded him in police custody for 14 days. However, the accused later applied for bail and the court granted it," quotes the HT.

Dr Prashant Jawade, medical superintendent at NMMC hospital told the TOI, "The copy of the complaint to Terna hospital by the intern against the accused was given to NMMC hospital management. Thereafter, the victim lodged a police complaint."
