Confirmation to this effect was made a senior health ministry official to the daily The New Indian Express which has reported that according to sources, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has cleared a proposal by the Medical Council of India-Board of Governors extending the validity of their NEET score to three years.

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test- Under  Graduate) is an entrance examination which is to be conducted by the National Testing Agency once a year for admission in MBBS/BDS course in all medical colleges acroos the country whether government and private except certain institutions including AIIMS and JIPMER.

Further with amendments made last year, the entrance exam has also become mandatory for students wishing to pursue MBBS from abroad. The decision was taken to ensure that students of some academic standard study medicine in foreign universities.

It's Official: NEET is Mandatory for pursuing MBBS from Abroad

Currently, NEET scores have a validity of only one year. However, this combined with the fact that its mandatory for foreign medical education, would imply that besides domestic, those students wanting to go abroad for MBBS would also have to appear for the exam again and again.

In order to bring relief to such students, the government was mulling on the proposal to increase the validity of NEET scores, so that students who wish to go abroad in the next two years after giving their NEET exam are able to do so without appearing for the entrance again and again.

The New Indian Express now reports that the proposal has found the favour of the Medical Council of India as well as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“This is being done to help students who might be living outside India and are willing to come back after becoming doctors,” a senior official with the ministry told TNIE. “This will save students the hassle of taking NEET all over again if for some reason they can’t join a medical college in the year they appear for NEET,” he added.
