Only 7 Percent of Digital Tools for Child Neurodevelopment Have Scientific Evidence, Review Finds
While digital tools aim to bridge the care gap for the 1 in 10 children facing neurodevelopmental challenges, a critical evidence void remains. A recent study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in January 2025 reveals that among 112 reviewed resources, a mere 7% of applications possess published scientific evidence of efficacy.
As the prevalence of neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) rises globally, the urgent demand for early intervention has outpaced traditional clinical capacity, leading overwhelmed caregivers to seek accessible support through digital technologies that often lack standardized evaluations. Consequently, Kelsie Ann Boulton and her colleagues from the University of Sydney conducted a systematic review to evaluate the information quality, utility, and evidence base of digital resources currently marketed for childhood developmental concerns.
Therefore, the evaluation utilized a stepwise methodology to screen 3,435 separate resources identified between October and November 2023, ultimately selecting 43 applications and 69 digital resources for assessment using the Adapted Mobile App Rating Scale (A-MARS) to measure primary endpoints of engagement, functionality, and information quality. The research team employed statistical analyses to compare platforms while excluding non-English or commercial products to ensure the findings remained focused on free, actionable developmental support for children and their families.
Key Clinical Findings of the Review Include:
Targeted Conditions: The review shows that Autism Spectrum Disorder was the most frequent focus at 17%, followed by communication difficulties at 14.3% and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at 9.8%.
Design Quality: In the review, both platforms scored above the 3.0 acceptable threshold for functionality and aesthetics, indicating they are well-designed for families.
Platform Differences: Applications significantly outperformed digital resources in engagement, yet digital resources offered more credible information (P < .006).
Partnered Success: Tools created with health or academic institutions received significantly higher overall quality ratings (P < .001) than those developed independently in the review.
Empirical Gap: Scientific evidence of effectiveness was identified in only 7% of applications and no digital resources in the review.
The results suggest that while the majority of reviewed resources are highly functional and aesthetically pleasing, the average source credibility for mobile applications remains low at 2.52, and the lack of empirical backing across 93% of tools makes formal clinical recommendation difficult. This divide highlights the urgent need for new frameworks to test digital efficacy in promoting supportive behaviors for families.
Thus, the review concludes clinicians should prioritize recommending digital resources developed through reputable institutional partnerships, as these platforms currently offer the most reliable and high-quality information for managing complex developmental needs.
Although the analysis was limited to free, English-language resources and potentially subjective rating scales, it underscores a vital opportunity for multi-stakeholder collaboration to create rapid evaluation frameworks that can validate digital tools for neurodivergent populations.
