1,07,948 MBBS Seats across 704 Medical Colleges in India: Health Ministry gives breakup

New Delhi: There are altogether 704 medical colleges in India with an intake capacity of 1,07,948 MBBS seats, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Referring to the increase in the number of medical colleges and subsequent increase in MBBS seats, the MoS Health informed that there is an increase of 82% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 704 as of now.

Apart from this, there is an increase of 110% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,07,948 as of now. Further, there is also an increase of 117% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802 as of now.

According to the data revealed by the Ministry, among the 704 medical colleges, there are 379 government medical colleges and 315 private medical colleges. The most number of medical colleges i.e. 74 medical colleges are in Tamil Nadu. Karnataka comes in second place with 70 medical colleges in the State.

Besides, there are 1 medical college in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 37 medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, 1 in Arunachal Pradesh, 13 medical colleges in Assam, 21 in Bihar, 1 in Chandigarh, 14 in Chhattisgarh, 1 in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, 10 medical colleges in Delhi, 1 medical college in Goa, 39 medical colleges in Gujarat, 15 medical colleges in Haryana, 8 medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh, 12 in Jammu & Kashmir, 9 in Jharkhand, 33 in Kerala, 27 in Madhya Pradesh, 67 in Maharashtra, 4 medical colleges in Manipur, 1 in Meghalaya, 1 in Mizoram, 1 in Nagaland, 17 medical colleges in Odisha, 9 in Puducherry, 12 in Punjab, 35 in Rajasthan, 1 in Sikkim, 56 in Telangana, 2 in Tripura, 68 in Uttar Pradesh and 35 medical colleges in West Bengal.

In case of medical seats, there are altogether 107948 MBBS seats across the country including 56283 MBBS seats in Government medical colleges and 51665 seats in private medical colleges.

Among these, Karnataka has the highest number of 11695 MBBS seats, followed by 11600 seats in Tamil Nadu. Apart from these, there are 114 MBBS seats in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 6435 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 50 in Arunachal Pradesh, 1550 seats in Assam, 2665 seats in Bihar, 150 seats in Chandigarh, 2005 seats in Chhattisgarh, 177 in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, 1497 in Delhi, 180 seats in Goa, 6900 seats in Gujarat, 2185 seats in Haryana, 920 seats in Himachal Pradesh, 1347 in Jammu & Kashmir, 980 in Jharkhand, 4655 seats in Kerala, 4650 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 10745 seats in Maharashtra, 525 seats in Manipur, 50 seats in Meghalaya, 100 seats in Mizoram, 100 seats in Nagaland, 2525 seats in Odisha, 1830 seats in Puducherry, 1800 seats in Punjab, 5575 seats in Rajasthan, 150 seats in Sikkim, 8540 seats in Telangana, 225 seats in Tripura, 9703 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 1150 seats in Uttarakhand, and 5175 seats in West Bengal.

Update on Medical Colleges in Aspirational Districts:

The MoS Health also informed the Lok Sabha about the update on medical colleges in Aspirational Districts. She informed that the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing government or private medical college with fund sharing between the centre and state governments in the ratio of 90:10 for north-eastern and special category states and 60:40 for others. Under this scheme, 157 medical colleges have been approved in three phases including 02 medical colleges in Maharashtra, 03 medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh & 27 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the scheme guidelines, the planning, execution and commissioning of the projects is to be done by the state government. The details of medical colleges approved in the states of Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh are at Annexure-II.

Additionally, financial support has been provided to Himachal Pradesh for an increase of 120 MBBS seats in 6 medical colleges for Rs. 144 crore and 17 post-graduate seats in 1 medical college for Rs. 14.50 crore under CSS for upgradation of existing state government/ central government medical colleges for increasing MBBS under-graduate seats and post-graduate seats.

Further, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) support has been provided to Himachal Pradesh for upgradation of 02 Government medical colleges at Tanda & Shimla by setting up of Super Specialty blocks. Further, AIIMS at Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh has also been established.

Under CSS financial support has been provided to Maharashtra for increase of 700 MBBS seats in 14 medical colleges for Rs. 839.86 Crore and 692 post-graduate seats in 11 medical college for Rs. 345.79 Crore has been provided for upgradation of existing state government/ central government medical colleges for increasing MBBS under-graduate seats and post-graduate seats.

Further, under PMSSY support has been provided to the state for upgradation of 6 Government medical colleges at Mumbai, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Latur, Akola & Yavatmal by setting up of Super Specialty blocks. Further, AIIMS at Nagpur in Maharashtra has also been established.

Regarding upgradation of existing state government/ central government medical colleges for increasing MBBS under-graduate seats and post-graduate seats, financial support has been provided to Uttar Pradesh for increase of 432 MBBS seats in 7 medical colleges for Rs. 518.39 Crore and 556 post-graduate seats in 12 Medical College for Rs. 375.92 crore under CSS.

Further, under PMSSY support has been provided to the state for upgradation of 11 government medical colleges at Lucknow, Varanasi, Aligarh, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Meerut, Agra & Kanpur by setting up of Super Specialty blocks. Further, AIIMS at Rae Bareli & Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh have also been established.
