1,40,124 MBBS seats available across 836 medical colleges for 2026-27, 1,27,028 renewed, 13,186 increased: NMC releases seat matrix

New Delhi: Altogether 1,40,214 MBBS seats are available in India for the academic year 2026-2027, according to the seat matrix recently released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The seat matrix details for the current academic year revealed that 1,27,028 MBBS seats were renewed and 13,186 MBBS seats were increased across 836 medical colleges in the country.

Releasing the seat matrix, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC issued a notice on September 9, 2026, which mentioned, "In continuation of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Public Notice dated 14.07.2026 regarding updating of the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27, the updated Seat Matrix, as on 01.09.2026, for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27 is enclosed herewith."

"The updated Seat Matrix incorporates the permissions granted for establishment of new Medical (MBBS) Colleges and increase in the annual intake capacity of existing Medical (MBBS) Colleges by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB), the 1st Appeal Committee, NMC, and the 2nd Appeal Committee, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW), under the relevant provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019," added the notice.

The Commission further directed all private medical colleges that have received permission to start a new MBBS college or increase their MBBS seat intake, but have not yet submitted the required E-Bank Guarantee, to submit it within seven days of the public notice.

Following this, the Letter of Permission (LoP) will be issued by MARB only after the receipt and verification of the requisite E-Bank Guarantee and confirmation that the same is in order.

"The enclosed Seat Matrix shall remain subject to revision, wherever required, on the basis of subsequent decisions of the Appeal Committee(s) or any other competent authority. Any revised Seat Matrix, wherever applicable, shall be uploaded on the official website of the National Medical Commission and shall be taken into consideration by the Central and respective State Counselling Committees for counselling and admission," the notice stated.

In case any counselling committee notices any discrepancy or deviation in the approved Seat Matrix, the Commission asked to refer the matter to MARB for clarification.

It said, "No Counselling Committee shall, under any circumstances, permit admission against seats in excess of the number of seats approved and notified by MARB."

Providing necessary directions to all medical colleges, MARB further mentioned, "All Medical Colleges are advised to carefully verify the details pertaining to their respective institutions in the enclosed Seat Matrix for the Academic Year 2026–27. In case any discrepancy or omission is noticed, the same shall be brought immediately to the notice of the President, MARB, or the Director, MARB. for examination and appropriate decision, preferably before commencement of the counselling process. All Medical Colleges shall strictly ensure that admissions for the Academic Year 2026–27 are made only against the number of seats approved and notified in the Seat Matrix enclosed with this Public Notice, as amended from time to time, wherever applicable. Under no circumstances shall any Medical College/Institution admit students in excess of its approved annual intake capacity. Any admission made in excess of the approved intake capacity shall be treated as non compliance of the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed thereunder, and shall attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting Medical College/Institution."

Seat Matrix:

As per state wise details, 114 MBBS seats are available in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 7,615 MBBS seats in Andhra Pradesh, 100 MBBS seats in Arunachal Pradesh, 1,975 MBBS seats in Assam. 4,660 MBBS seats are available in Bihar, 200 MBBS seats in Chandigarh, 2,625 MBBS seats in Chhattisgarh, 177 MBBS seats in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 1,415 MBBS seats in Delhi, 250 MBBS seats in Goa, 7,800 MBBS seats in Gujarat, 3,060 MBBS seats in Haryana, 871 MBBS seats in Himachal Pradesh.

Further, 1,750 MBBS seats are available in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,650 MBBS seats are available in Jharkhand, 15,745 MBBS seats in Karnataka, 5,754 MBBS seats are available in Kerala, 6,120 MBBS seats in Madhya Pradesh, and 13,249 MBBS seats in Maharashtra.

A total of 550 MBBS seats are available in Manipur, 250 MBBS seats in Meghalaya, 100 MBBS seats in Mizoram, 100 MBBS seats in Nagaland, 3,000 MBBS seats in Odisha, 1,830 MBBS seats in Puducherry, 1,850 MBBS seats in Punjab, 8,280 MBBS seats in Rajasthan, 200 MBBS seats in Sikkim, and 14,299 MBBS seats are available in Tamil Nadu.

Telangana has 10,450 MBBS seats, Tripura has 500 MBBS seats, Uttar Pradesh has 14,400 MBBS seats, Uttarakhand has 1,525 MBBS seats, and West Bengal has 7,350 MBBS seats.

Management wise:

Referring to this notice, NMC secretary Dr Raghav Langer, in a communication to all medical colleges, institutions stated, "Reference is invited to Public Notice dated 10-09-2026 as issued by Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) on the above subject matter being self explanatory interalia enclosing the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27 as updated (as on 01-09-2026) which includes the approvals granted by MARB, Ist Appeal Committee-NMC and 2nd Appeal Committee-MoH&FW. The enclosed seat matrix shall remain subject to revision, if required, based on the decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority. The above said Public Notice indicate certain instructions/directions both for the Medical Colleges and the Counseling Committees for necessary compliance. All Medical Colleges shall strictly ensure that admissions are made only against the approved number of seats for the Academic Year 2026–27. Any admission made in excess of the approved intake capacity shall be treated as non compliance of the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed thereunder, and shall attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting Medical College/Institution. Accordingly, all Medical Colleges/Institutions and concerned stakeholders are requested to take note of the instructions/directions for compliance and necessary action on their part."
