4,989 MD, MS, Diploma, DM, MCh seats across Bihar, Punjab, Puducherry, JnK, Assam- check NMC seat matrix breakdown
New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has listed a total of 4,989 postgraduate and super speciality medical seats across Bihar, Punjab, Puducherry, Jammu Kashmir and Assam for the academic year 2026-27 in its latest PG seat matrix.
The seats include postgraduate MD and MS courses, along with Doctorate of Medicine (DM), Master of Chirurgiae (MCh), and diploma courses across government and private medical colleges and deemed universities in the state.
In the state-wise breakup of the postgraduate medical seats, Bihar has 1,470 seats, Punjab has 982 seats, Puducherry has 869 seats, Jammu & Kashmir has 846 seats, and Assam has 822 seats. Altogether, these five states and Union Territories account for 4,989 postgraduate medical seats.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the NMC released a seat matrix showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. However, the Apex Medical Commission has clarified that the seat matrix does not include seats related to applications received for an increase in the intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
Bihar
According to the latest seat matrix, there are 1,470 postgraduate and super-speciality medical seats in Bihar. Among the various specialities, M.S. General Surgery has the highest number of seats with 147, followed by M.D. General Medicine with 146 seats, while the lowest number of seats is 1 each in M.Ch. Gynaecological Oncology.
Meanwhile, M.S. Obstetrics and Gynaecology has 124 seats; M.D. Anaesthesiology has 113 seats; M.D. Paediatrics has 103 seats; M.D. Pathology has 99 seats, M.S. Orthopaedics has 84 seats, M.S. Ophthalmology has 68 seats, M.D. Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology has 65 seats, and M.D. Microbiology has 63 seats.
The state has 58 M.D. Physiology seats, 56 M.D. Anatomy seats, 55 M.D. Pharmacology seats, 52 M.D. BioChemistry seats, 47 M.S. Otorhinolaryngology/ENT seats, 46 M.D. Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology seats, and 34 M.D. Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine seats. It also has 14 seats each in M.D. Psychiatry and M.D. Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases, 12 M.D. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology/Forensic Medicine seats, 5 M.D. Emergency Medicine seats, and 4 seats each in M.D. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and M.D. Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy.
In the super-specialty courses, Bihar has 5 D.M. Medical Gastroenterology seats, 5 D.M. Nephrology seats, 5 D.M. Neurology seats, 3 D.M. Cardiology seats, 3 D.M. Critical Care Medicine seats and 2 D.M. Clinical Pharmacology seats. The M.Ch. courses include 8 seats in M.Ch. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 4 in M.Ch. Neurosurgery, 4 in M.Ch. Urology, 3 in M.Ch. Surgical Gastroenterology, 2 in M.Ch. Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery, 2 in M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery, 2 in M.Ch. Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, and 1 in M.Ch. Gynaecological Oncology. In addition, 8 Diploma in Anaesthesiology seats are listed.

Meanwhile, M.D. General Medicine has 95 seats, M.D. Anatomy has 30 seats, M.D. Biochemistry has 17 seats; M.D. Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine has 28 seats; M.D. Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology has 23 seats; M.D. Emergency Medicine has 8 seats, and M.D. Family Medicine has 2 seats.
Further, there are 17 M.D. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology/Forensic Medicine seats, 8 M.D. Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion seats, 30 M.D. Microbiology seats, 50 M.D. Paediatrics seats, 56 M.D. Pathology seats, 25 M.D. Pharmacology seats and 26 M.D. Physiology seats.
