744 MBBS, 9783 PG Medical Seats remained vacant in last three years: Health Minister tells parliament

New Delhi: Altogether 744 MBBS and 9783 Postgraduate (PG) seats remained vacant in the last three years, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently informed the Parliament.

Apart from this, the Health Minister further informed that altogether 18,72,343 students registered and 17,64,571 students appeared in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) this year.

For the academic year 2022-2023, there are a total number of 96,077 MBBS seats available for admission, Minister Mandaviya further mentioned in a written statement laid before the Rajya Sabha.

The Minister was responding to a series of questions raised by Dr. K. Keshava Rao, who sought to know about the number of students who appeared for the NEET Examination in the last three years, the number of seats available for UG and PG medical admission in the last three years, and the details about the medical seats (both UG and PG) that remained vacant during these years.

Replying to these questions, the Union Health Minister in a written statement informed that as per the information received from National Testing Agency (NTA), altogether 18,72,343 students registered for NEET in 2022 and a total number of 17,64,571 students appeared for the students this year. He also informed that this year a total number of 96077 MBBS seats are available for admission for the academic year 2022-2023.

The data shared by the Health Minister further revealed that back in 2020 and 2021, altogether 15,97,435 and 16,14,777 students registered for NEET examination respectively. In these two years, 13,66,945 students appeared for the test back in 2020 and 15,44,273 students appeared for it last year i.e. 2021.

It has further been mentioned in the data that altogether 83275 MBBS seats were available for MBBS admission for the academic year 2020-2021 and 92065 MBBS seats were available for the next academic year i.e. 2021-2022.

Regarding the PG medical seats, the Health Minister informed that in the last three years, 55495 PG medical seats were available for admission for the academic year 2020-2021 and 60202 seats were available for admission for the academic year 2021-2022. For this academic year i.e. 2022-2023, altogether 64059 PG medical seats are available for admission, Health Minister informed Parliament.

Details of number of Undergraduate (UG)/Postgraduate(PG) seats available during the admission process of last three years:-

Vacant Seats: 

The Health Minister also shared the data regarding the medical seats that remained vacant in the last three years. As per the data shared by the Minister, altogether 744 MBBS seats remained vacant since 2018. While the number of vacant seats were 274 for the academic year 2018-2019, the number was 273 for the academic year 2019-2020. Last year, i.e. the academic year 2021-2022, a total number of 197 MBBS seats remained vacant, informed the Minister.

In case of the PG medical seats, the total number of vacant seats is much higher in comparison. While the PG medical seats are only limited in number, the data shared by the Health Minister revealed that a huge number of 9783 PG medical seats remained vacant in the last three years.

For the academic year 2019-2020, the vacant PG medical seats were highest in number. Back then, altogether 4614 PG medical seats did not find any taker. In the next two academic years i.e. 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, altogether 1425 and 3744 PG medical seats remained vacant respectively, revealed the data.
