ACSR Govt Medical College plans to introduce PG medical courses, application sent to NMC

Nellore: Bringing good news to the Postgraduate medical students in Andhra Pradesh, Nellore-based AC Subba Reddy Government Medical College has applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking permission for 115 to 120 PG medical courses in both clinical and non-clinical specialties and the college might introduce these courses this year following the NMC nod.

Sources in the institute has confirmed to Deccan Chronicle that NMC, the Apex medical body has already inspected the medical college. The college has also paid the monetary fee of Rs 49 lakh for the courses.

The college has sought NMC nod for two seats each in the non-clinical subjects including Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Micro Biology, Forensic Medicine, Bio-Chemistry, Pathology, and SPM (Social and Preventive Medicine).

Besides, permission for around 104 PG medical seats in clinical subjects has also been requested by the college. The Clinical specialties for which the institute has applied include General Medicine, General Surgery, OBG (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Ophthalmology, ENT, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and Pulmonology.

Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle regarding the issue, a faculty member clarified that the professors and associate professors who are teaching the Undergraduate medical courses can teach the PG students as well.

Referring to the fact that 3 PG seats get allotted under each professor and 2 seats under associate professors, he also informed the daily that some departments were going to enhance the seats, while permission for PG seats has been requested for some new departments such as Radiology as well.

A senior faculty member told the daily that with the nod for the PG medical courses, the outreach medical services in the attached Government General Hospital will also improve as the PG medicos have hospital duty as part of their routines. "In fact, the services in the GGH are certain to become better and better as nearly 120 PG students are added every year," the faculty told the daily.

While NMC has reported inspected the college already, there is a provision for inspecting the facilities and infrastructure even after giving the nod.
