Admission beyond Sanctioned Capacity: NMC reduces 8 MBBS Seats at GMC Jammu for this academic year

Srinagar: The Government Medical College, Jammu is now facing action from the National Medical Commission (NMC), which has reduced 8 MBBS seats of the medical college for the academic year 2023-2024.

NMC took this decision as the medical college made a gross blunder by admitting students more than the sanctioned intake capacity. While the institute has an annual intake capacity of 180 MBBS seats, it admitted 184 MBBS students.

Taking action against this violation, the Apex medical education regulatory body has now reduced 8 MBBS seats in the medical college for this academic year.

Writing to the Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu on July 20, 2023, the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC, Shambhu Sharan Kumar mentioned, "The matter was discussed in the Coordination Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of NMC Chairman on July 13 and accordingly, the decision was taken to reduce 8 seats (double the number of excess intake of 4 seats) of the Medical College for the academic year 2023-24, as a punishment."

As per the latest media report by Daily Excelsior, the Director of UGMEB had also directed the Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu for investigating the mattter and fix accountability/responsibility of person(s) responsible for the blunder. NMC has also asked the authorities to submit an Action Taken Report in this regard within 15 days of issuance of the communication.

“If no response from GMC Jammu is received within the stipulated period of 15 days, the order of reduction of 8 seats for the academic year 2023-24 will remain effective to the academic year 2024-25 also,” further stated the letter.

The NMC action of reducing seats at GMC Jammu has come as a shock for both the college authorities as well as MBBS aspirants who will take admission this year. Due to the NMC's decision, this year only 172 students will get a chance of pursuing an MBBS course from GMC, Jammu.

Meanwhile, sources in the Health and Medical Education Department of J&K informed the Daily that Administrative Secretary Bhupinder Kumar has already set up a committee to fix accountability in the matter. Headed by Director New Medical Colleges, this committee also submitted its report, adds the Daily.

“Based on the recommendations of the report of the Committee, action has already been taken against the then Head of the Institution who has been transferred and posted as Secretary (Technical) in Health and Medical Education Department,” sources informed Daily Excelsior adding that the Action Taken Report will be submitted to the Apex medical commission within the stipulated time frame.
