New Delhi: The representatives of All India Medical Students' Association Foreign Medical Students' Wing recently felicitated Dr. Vinky Rughwani for being appointed as a member of the Medical Advisory Council of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

During the meeting, the representatives of AIMSA FMGW also discussed the issues faced by the Foreign Medical Graduates from Maharashtra and all across the country.

They also highlighted the irregularities in granting provisional and permanent registration certificates to medical graduates from abroad. Further, the association also thanked Dr. Rughwani, who is an administrator of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) for the easy process and allotment to all the FMGs.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, the National Convenor of AIMSA-FMGW Dr. Apurv Dalvi informed that nearly more than 1200 FMGs are currently doing internships in Maharashtra as domicile and non-domicile candidates.

"In most of the other states , there is a seat vacancy issue and all the FMGs are not being allotted seats," informed Dr. Dalvi, who is also the National Coordinator of AIMSA.

Request for Timely Counselling and Registration Processes for FMGE Graduates:

Highlighting the critical concerns faced by the medical graduates regarding the registration processes at the Maharshtra Medical Council (MMC), the association requested for Early Counselling for FMGE July 2024 passouts.

"We would like to request that the counselling sessions for Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) July 2024 passouts be initiated at the earliest. Many graduates are eager to begin their professional journey, and a timely commencement of counselling sessions would greatly assist them in securing their provisional registration and advancing their careers," AIMSA FMGW mentioned in a letter addressed to Dr. Rughwani.

Further, it also highlighted the delays in granting provisional registration for FMGE June 2023 & December 2023 batch and mentioned that they received numerous complaints from graduates of the FMGE June 2023 and December 2023 batches regarding prolonged delays in obtaining their provisional registration.

Despite completing their applications, many FMGs have been waiting for 5-6 months without any resolution, which is causing considerable stress and career setbacks, informed the association and urged Dr. Rughwani to intervene and expedite these applications to ensure a smoother and more efficient process.

Apart from these, the association also highlighted the delays in permanent registration post internship for the FMGs and mentioned that graduates who have completed their internships are facing similar delays, with some waiting for over 5-6 months to receive their permanent registration.

"This delay is hindering their ability to practice and further their medical careers. We urge the council to streamline this process and reduce the waiting period for all deserving candidates," the letter mentioned.

Request for Safety Measures and Well-Being Guidelines for Resident Doctors and Medical Professionals:

The association also highlighted the growing concerns for the safety and mental well-being of resident doctors and medical professionals across the country including the rising assault cases against medical professionals, mental health crisis faced by the resident doctors due to excessive workload and toxic environment, etc.

In this regard, the association urged Dr. Rughwani, a newly appointed Medical Advisory Council member of NMC to consider issuing state-wise guidelines to all medical colleges and institutions addressing these concerns, including limiting work hours, initiating mandatory counselling services, implementing policies to address toxic behaviour and harassment from administration and faculty, and establishing effective, anonymous, and transparent grievance redressal mechanisms to address the concerns of students and professionals without fear of retaliation.
