Centre Govt Approval for 60 New Medical Colleges

New Delhi: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in India, the Union Government has approved 60 new medical colleges across the country. With this permission from the Centre, the number of medical colleges in the country has increased from 706 medical colleges in 2023-2024 to 766 medical colleges in 2024-2025.

As per a PIB release, the Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda recently informed that there is an increase of 8.07% in Medical Colleges from 706 in 2023-2024 to 766 in 2024-2025.

There has been 98% increase in medical colleges from 387 in 2013-14 to 766 in 2024-25. During the same period, 379 new medical colleges have been established and, presently there are 766 (Govt: 423, Pvt: 343) medical colleges in the Country, informed the Minister, adding that the increase in medical colleges and MBBS and PG seats would lead to increase in the availability of doctors in the healthcare system.

Further, the Ministry data revealed that there is an increase of 6.30 % in MBBS seats from 1,08,940 in 2023-24 to 1,15,812 in 2024-25. MBBS Seats increased by 64,464 (i.e., 125%) from 2013-14 (51,348 seats) to 2024-25 (11,5812 seats).

Not only the UG medical seats, but the PG medical seats have increased as well. There is an increase of 5.92% in PG seats from 69,024 in 2023-24 to 73,111 in 2024-25. During the last ten years, the number of PG seats increased by 39,460 (i.e., 127%) from 2013-14 (31,185 seats) to 2024-25 (73,111 seats).

Confirming this, a senior official informed the Times of India, "The number of MBBS seats in India has increased 6%, from 1,08,940 in 2023-24 to 1,15,812 in 2024-25."

Mentioning that there has been a 6% increase in PG medical seats- from 69,024 in 2023-2024 to 73,111 in 2024-2025, the official added, "During the last 10 years, the number of PG seats increased by 39,460 (i.e. 127%) from 2013-14 (31,185 seats) to 2024-25 (73,111 seats)."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission recently granted its permission for MBBS admission at 44 new medical colleges and allowed an increase of MBBS seats in altogether 19 existing medical colleges for the academic year 2024-25.

Among these 44 new medical colleges, 24 medical colleges have received the NMC permission for 50 MBBS seats, 11 medical colleges have received permission for 100 MBBS seats and 9 medical colleges have been granted permission for 150 MBBS seats each.
