Faridkot: Controversy seems to be never ending for Pathankot based Chintpurni Medical College, which arranged for a college level counselling on May 28 and 29 for filling up the vacant MBBS seats.
Although the college had prayed before the Supreme Court for filling up 41 vacant MBBS seats, the top court rejected such a prayer on May 27. Following this, the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has come forward and clarified that any admission made in the medical college after April 28, the last date set by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) would be considered as null and void.
Medical Dialogues had extensively reported about the controversial shutdown of Chintpurni Medical College after the Board of Governors of erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had found that the institute was admitting students without the MCI approval ever since its inception in 2011. In addition, the college did not have the necessary infrastructure and did not provide adequate facilities for the purpose of medical studies.
Consequently, the Executive Committee of MCI recommended debarring the petitioner College from admitting students for two academic years i.e. 2017-18 and 2018-19 and to encash the bank guarantee of Rs 2 crores that was furnished by the petitioner at the time of grant of recognition dated 26.09.2016. The Central Government accepted the recommendation of the MCI and debarred the medical college from admitting 150 students in the MBBS course for two academic years-- 2017-18 and 2018-19 as well as permitted the apex medical council to en-cash the Bank Guarantee furnished by the medical college.
Following this the students were shifted elsewhere after the Supreme Court ordered the same and the top court had clarified at that time that the college would be entitled to pursue the permission for the academic years 2019- 20 and 2020-21 after the period of the ban.
Recently, the Apex Medical Regulator, NMC granted its permission to the medical college to admit students in 150 MBBS seats on April 11, the same date on which the stray vacancy round for NEET UG counselling was completed by BFUHS. Taking note of the new development, BFUHS decided to conduct a special round of State counselling for the newly added MBBS seats.
However, after the completion of the counselling, 41 MBBS seats remained vacant and the college issued an advertisement on its own for filling up the vacant seats, adds Hindustan Times.
In fact, the college management had approached the Apex Court as well in this regard and prayed for permission to fill up the vacant seats. However, the top court rejected the plea on May 27.
Soon after the medical college invited students for admission on its campus, BFUHS clarified that as fixed by DGHS, the last date for MBBS admission was on April 28. Therefore, any admission conducted by the medical college on its own would be termed as null and void.
Speaking to the daily in this regard, the Vice Chancellor of BFUHS, Dr. Raj Bahadur said, "It has come to the notice of the university that the CMC has published an advertisement to conduct college-level counselling on April 28-29 for admission to the vacant seats of MBBS course for session 2021-22. All the NEET UG-2021 aspirants are informed that it is a grave violation of rules and regulations of the National Medical Commission."
"A writ petition filed by the CMC in the Supreme Court to fill the vacant seats has also been dismissed on May 27. Therefore, any admission made by the institute after April 28 to the MBBS course will be considered as null and void and will not be registered or regularised by this university. The candidates who will take admission in the MBBS course on May 28-29 at the CMC will be solely responsible for the consequences arising thereof. Such irregular admissions made by college directly after last date without the centralised counselling process conducted by state counselling agency (BFUHS) shall be reported for the cancellation to the NMC and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC)," he added.
