Committee finds dean of Pune Medical College guilty in Rs 10 lakh bribery case

Pune: Following the arrest of the dean of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College in an alleged bribery case, the internal committee investigating the case found the dean guilty of taking bribes from students in exchange for their admission.

According to the report submitted by the committee, it has been confirmed that the dean is involved in the bribery case of taking a Rs 10 lakh bribe to secure a student’s admission for an MBBS course in the medical college under a special quota.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the incident where the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on August 8 arrested the dean of the medical college run by the Pune Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust.

The incident was discovered after the complainant’s son was allotted a seat under the institutional quota in the medical college in the first admission round of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) after he had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2023 exam.

“(To take the process forward), the dean demanded a Rs 16 lakh bribe other than the government fees of Rs 22.50 lakh from a parent to secure the admission of his son to the MBBS course," said the ACB. As a result, he was caught red-handed by the team.

The three-member committee was constituted by municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar on August 14 who also assured that string action would be taken against the dean if found guilty. 

Talking about this, Kumar told Pune Times Mirror, “We had formed a three-member committee that included chief medical officer Bhagwan Pawar, deputy commissioner (General Administration) Sachin Ithape, and deputy commissioner (vigilance) Mahesh Patil. The committee has submitted the final inquiry report. As per the rulebook, we will take appropriate and strong action against the dean.”
