New Delhi: The highest medical qualification in the field of metabolic disorders, DM Endocrinology, will now be known as DM Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has officially approved a change in the nomenclature of its superspeciality course.

AIIMS announced the adoption of the new title in an office memorandum issued on 13th November.

In the notification, Registrar Prof. Girija Prasad Rath stated that the competent authority has approved the renaming based on the recommendations of the 124th Standing Academic Committee meeting held on 15 July 2024, which was later ratified by the Governing Body in its 163rd meeting on 12 September 2025.
The updated course name has been adopted to more accurately capture the expanding academic and clinical scope of the speciality, which now encompasses the comprehensive management of endocrine disorders, metabolic diseases, and diabetes. All departments concerned have been instructed to implement the revised nomenclature across academic, administrative, and digital platforms.
The change is expected to bring the Indian superspeciality programme into closer alignment with global endocrinology curricula, where metabolism and diabetes are recognised as integral components of advanced endocrine education.
It is expected that this decision of the AIIMS will be followed by other medical colleges across the country, in accordance with NMC guidelines.
