'Inhumane Torture' and Ragging horror at SVN Medical College, Junior Residents made to stand continuously, refused hostel rooms

Nagpur: An instance of "inhumane torture" and "ragging" has come up in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district as a complaint has been filed in this regard alleging ragging of a Junior Resident first year student of MS General Surgery at Shri Vasantrao Naik (SVN) Medical College by his seniors.

Writing to the Dean of the Medical College, the guardian of the PG medico has alleged that the third-year Junior resident doctors have been causing physical and mental torture to the first-year medico by several means.

The instances of ragging that the complainant has alleged include the fact that the 1st year Junior Residents are not being allotted to go to their hostel rooms even if there is no work in wards of OPD. 

"They are made to stay in doctor's room in wards thus not being able to bathe and maintain personal hygiene and are sleep deprived. They are so sleep deprived that it affects their quality of work towards patient care which might be risky for the Patients," the complainant alleged in her letter dated August 23, 2022.

In fact, it has further been alleged in the letter that after the night rounds, the Senior students are making the first-year medicos come back after night rounds at around 12 am and stay until 2 to 3am to "ensure that JR-1 residents keep Standing all through night and make them write reports. Stooping on a low table such that it causes backpain and posture problems. All this can be done sitting on a table & chair."

Citing another instance of the "inhumane torture and ragging" the letter mentioned that "If by chance any JR-1 is found dozing, the JR-3 resident pulls his hair and douses water on his/her face. Any person made to stand continuously for 24 to 48 hour without any rest is bound to doze involuntarily."

The ragging by the Senior students has been so severe that after joining the institute back on March 7th 2022, the first-year PG medico Dr. Anmol allegedly developed Cellulitis in his left leg by March end because he needs to stand non stop and does not get any rest.

Describing how the situation became severe for the medico, the complainant mentioned that "He came back home to get this condition. He re-joined again on May 1st Week. The situation worsened for him since his JR-3 residents treated him with contempt and humiliation His Cellulitis condition became severe again after that he reported to senior authorities but he was told that it is a skin condition after which it progressed to sever form of vencose veins."

It has further been alleged in the letter that one of the Senior students made the First-year medico perform his personal tasks. Referring to this, the complainant mentioned, "My ward was asked to pick and carry, Mango box belonging to Dr. Omkar to his hostel room on 3rd floor inspite of him being in tremendous pain. Dr. Anmol tried to excuse himself from this menial task but was reprimanded by Dr. Omkar to do it forcefully."

Sharing the copy of the complaint on Twitter, a doctor wrote, "This is unacceptable. we all need to do our bit to create a culture of learning and mutual respect for our juniors and resident doctors."
