Medical Dialogues had recently reported that sharing the data regarding the available medical seats in the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has informed that there are altogether 4825 MBBS and 1998 PG medical seats in West Bengal.

As per the latest media report by Telegraph India, now the PG medical seats at Malda Medical College and Hospital are going to increase since the NMC and the State Health Department have given the permission for adding 82 PG medical seats for 14 different PG medical courses.

Speaking about this, the vice-principal of the medical college, Puranjay Saha told the daily, "With the introduction of the new courses, the number of streams available for PG courses will increase to 17."

“We have received approval for 82 more seats for 14 different PG courses. The idea is to introduce these courses from the next academic session,” he added.

“In some streams, there will be four seats while some will have five seats,” a faculty member of the medical college added.

Vice Principal further informed that the State Health Department had instructed the medical college authorities for taking all the necessary steps to start the courses.

“Construction of a new hostel building is in progress and the agency will shortly hand it over to us. We also have an adequate number of teachers who would take classes for these courses,” he mentioned.

According to sources, the medical college would spend around Rs 90 crore for preparing the infrastructure for the new PG medical courses at the institute.

Back in 2011, the Malda district hospital had been upgraded into a medical college and it is the second-largest state-run health infrastructure in North Bengal after the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
