12648 DNB, FNB seats, 1621 CPS Seats in India: Health Minister tells parliament

New Delhi: Claiming a huge increase in the medical seats since 2014, the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday said that the PG medical seats have almost doubled during these years.

The Minister shared the credit of this surge in the education sector with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and also ensured that the government is trying to ensure that children aspiring for medical education do not have to go abroad.

Interacting with the reporters outside Parliament, Mandaviya further said the Modi government is trying to ensure that the country's need for doctors is fulfilled and children aspiring for medical education do not have to go abroad.

"The number of MBBS seats has recorded an increase of 87 per cent. Eight years ago, there were 53,000 seats, which have now grown to 96,000," Mandaviya told PTI.

In the same period, postgraduate medical seats have increased from 31,000 to 63,000, recording a 105 per cent increase, he said, adding that medical colleges have also increased from 387 in 2014 to 648 in 2022.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that recently Minister of State for Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Rajya Sabha that India has altogether 96,077 MBBS seats and 49,790 Postgraduate medical seats.

Among the MBBS seats, altogether 51,712 MBBS seats are in the Government Medical Colleges and 44,365 MBBS seats are in the Private Medical Colleges. In case of PG medical seats, overall 30,384 PG medical seats are available in the Government institutes while 19,406 PG medical seats are run by the private management.

Apart from this, the data shared by the MoS Health revealed that there are 12,648 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) / Fellowship of National Board (FNB) PG seats available in the country along with 1621 PG medical seats belonging to the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS).

Therefore, the Health Ministry claimed that since 2014, the total number of medical colleges in the country has increased by 67%. While the MBBS seats have increased by 87%, in case of the PG medical seats, the numbers have been increased by a huge 105%.

Recently, releasing a booklet titled Governance Reforms in Medical Education (2014-2022), the Health Ministry had claimed that as opposed to altogether 387 medical colleges back in 2014, currently India has a total number of 648 medical colleges with the addition of 261 medical colleges.

The booklet had also mentioned that since 2014, India has witnessed an increase of 67% in the establishment of medical colleges along with around 96% increase in the number of Government Medical Colleges and 42% increase in the private sector

While interacting with the reporters outside Parliament, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya further said that new education policy (NEP) is being hailed across states and all sections of society.

One can read any book through the Diksha portal by scanning a Quick Response (QR) Code while students from classes 1 to 12 are also being taught through the Swayam Prabha TV channel.

The Union Minister said that the dropout rate of girls from schools also saw a decline since 2014. Toilets have played an important role in curbing the dropout rate of girls in schools, Mandaviya said.

"In 2.5 lakh schools over 4.5 lakh toilets were built as a result of which the dropout ratio has dipped from 17 per cent to 13 per cent," he added
