Fake MBBS admission racket busted, Two arrested for duping aspirant of Rs 21 lakh

Balasore: In another MBBS admission fraud case reported in the city, the Balasore Cyber police in Odisha busted a racket and arrested two persons for allegedly cheating medical aspirants on the pretext of providing an MBBS seat outside the state.

While investigating the case, the police found that the duo were running an organisation in Bhubaneshwar where they manipulated and extracted money from the parents of the medical aspirants by promising to secure admission at a prestigious medical college.

According to the police, the duo has been identified as BTech students from Jajpur district who opened an organisation called SAI Academy Consultancy at Jaidev Vihar in Bhubaneswar to dupe the medical and engineering aspirants.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed that they have cheated seven engineering and medical aspirants and their parents of more than Rs 3 crore for over three years.

An FIR was registered at the cybercrime police under 419, 420, 465, 476, 468, 471, 120 (B), 506 and 34 of the IPC along with 66 (C) of the IT Act against the two fraudsters.

The fraud case was uncovered by the police after a student’s father lodged a complaint on April 14 claiming that the accused promised to prepare his daughter to crack the NEET and get a medical seat outside the state. As per the complainant, his daughter was undergoing coaching at Sai Academy at Jaydev Vihar in Bhubaneswar to crack the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

However, their dreams were shattered when the girl scored just 137 out of 700 marks in NEET/OJEE and never received a medical seat at a college. Following this, the father of the student approached the cyber police.

Meanwhile, it came to light that the accused demanded Rs Rs 50 lakh but after negotiations, agreed to Rs 28 lakh. The student’s father paid Rs 21 lakh in two instalments and promised to give the rest amount after her daughter’s admission.

Acting on the complaint, the police arrested the duo who were operating the racket for over three years. Of the two accused, one was operating from Kolkata and another was based in Bhubaneswar.

Balasore SP Sagarika Nath told TNIE, “At least six cases are pending against the accused duo in Lingaraj police station and one each in Infocity, Mancheswar, Laxmisagar, Jajpur and Bhadrak Town police stations. Similarly, another case is pending against them at the Bharno police station of Jharkhand.”

The fraudsters gave fake enrolment letters, hostel admission letters and even stethoscopes and aprons to the medical aspirants. The police have seized fake Aadhaar cards, an SUV, mobile phones and five ATM cards from the possession of the two accused.
