Gujarat: In Gujarat, a total of three MBBS seats are still vacant. Noting this, the Gujarat High Court has recently directed the authorities to conduct another admission round to fill these remaining seats in the first-year MBBS course for the 2025-26 academic year.

This order was passed by Justice Nirzar S Desai on January 6 while hearing a petition filed by the MedGuz Association of Gujarat medical colleges.

The association sought a writ of mandamus directing the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Courses to allot the vacant seats to eligible candidates on the basis of merit.

According to an Ahmedabad Mirror media news report, the court observed that medical admissions are governed by strict rules and timelines. Justice Desai further stated that there is no benefit in leaving seats vacant, especially at a time when there is a severe shortage of qualified doctors in society. The High Court has directed the respondents to complete this final admission process as expeditiously as possible.

Earlier, the petitioner had filed a petition in court stating that since no further admission rounds were scheduled, 57 MBBS seats might remain vacant. Acting on that petition, the respondent authorities conducted the fourth and fifth rounds of counselling and successfully filled those seats.

Meanwhile, the Director of Medical Education (DME), Gujarat, had ended the Choice filling process for the Special Stray Round for MBBS/BDS admissions 2025. According to the official website of DME Gujarat, the Choice filling process for the Special Stray Round for MBBS/BDS ended on 24 December 2025, 04:00 PM. Additionally, the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC), Government of Gujarat, had also released the updated list of vacant undergraduate medical and dental seats for the academic year 2025-26.
