ICMR Begins Application Process For Admission To PhD Program 2023, check out details

Delhi: Institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has begun the online application for admission to PhD Program 2023 at ICMR-NIRRCH (National Institute for Research in Reproductive and Child Health) Mumbai.

Application forms available at the NIRRCH website (www.nirrch.res.in) http://phdappli.nirrch.res.in/ should be duly filled and submitted online on or before 3rd July 2023. The hard copy of the application need not be submitted to the Institute. Only filled online applications will be considered.

Announcement of candidates shortlisted for the interview and the interview date will be intimated on the NIRRCH website.

Application fees –

1. General and OBC Category: Rs. 300/- plus Transaction Charges as applicable (Non-refundable)

2. SC/ST/PWD and EWS: Exempted from payment of fees

The thrust areas of research include –

1. Infertility and Reproductive Disorders

2. Immunological and microbiological attributes associated with HIV/STIs/RTIs

3. Maternal and Child Health

4. Reproductive Cancers

5. Osteoporosis

6. Genetic Disorders

7. Stem Cell Biology

8. Reproductive Toxicology

Eligibility criteria –

Candidates who are Indian citizens and have Post graduate degrees in any branch of Life Sciences (Biochemistry / Biotechnology / Microbiology / Zoology / Bioinformatics /Biophysics etc.) or MBBS/BDS graduates or MD/MPharm degree holders from India with at least 55% or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from higher secondary (10+2) onwards for General, OBC and #EWS category and 50% for SC/ST/Person with Disabilities (PWD) candidates in aggregate (or equivalent grade).

In case CGPA is not based on a 10-point scale, candidates should provide a statement issued by their respective universities indicating the conversion of CGPA to percentage. Candidates who have appeared in the academic year 2022-2023 and whose results are awaited are also eligible to apply. However, if selected, such candidates must submit proof of qualifying marks before joining the Institute. Kindly note that registration for PhD degree at the University of Mumbai will happen only after fulfilling the required eligibility criteria.

The candidate should have cleared at least one of the following exams –

1. PhD entrance test (PET) conducted by the University of Mumbai in any subjects of Life Sciences/ Applied Biology/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Zoology/ Biophysics/ Bioanalytical Science/ Molecular Biology

2. CSIR-UGC NET (JRF or LS) or GATE (Life Sciences/ Biotechnology with validity up to December 2023) or JRF examination conducted by national agencies such as ICMR/DBT (Life Sciences/Microbiology/Biotechnology/ Biochemistry)

3. Valid DST-Inspire fellowship

4. MH-SET (Maharashtra State Eligibility Test for Assistant Professor) in Life Sciences

Age limit –

The upper age limit is 28 years as on 30 June 23 for the General and EWS Category. Age relaxation of up to 5 years (33 years) for SC/ST/ PWD/Women candidates and up to 3 years (31 years) for OBC (NonCreamy Layer) candidates will be granted.

ICMR has further announced that EWS (Economically Weaker Section) vacancies are tentative, subject to further direction/clarification of GOI, and are subject to the outcome of any litigation pending in the court of law. The candidates seeking reservation under EWS should fulfill the criteria prescribed by the Government of India. The benefit of reservation under EWS can be availed upon producing an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority.

Selection procedure –

The names of the shortlisted candidates, along with the date and time for the interview, will be displayed on the NIRRCH and ICMR websites. The list of PhD guides (who have vacancy for PhD students in their laboratories) and tentative titles of research projects under them would be given to the shortlisted candidates before the final interview. The final selection would be based on the performance in the personal interview.

Fellowship –

The selected candidates who have passed the JRF examination conducted by CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT can avail of fellowship per the rules of the respective funding agencies. Non-fellowship holders will be provided an Institutional fellowship of Rs. 8000 per month after successfully completing coursework and PhD proposal presentation. It will be for 2 years only; later, these students are encouraged to seek fellowship from other funding agencies.

Hostel - Women candidates selected for PhD may avail of the Hostel facility upon request & based on availability.

NIRRCH reserves the right to change the minimum eligibility criteria in case of receipt of many applications. The decision of the Director and Selection Committee will be final, and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard. Canvassing in any form and/or bringing in any influence will be treated as disqualification. The Institute shall provide no traveling allowance at any stage of the admission process.
