The Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) is responsible for conducting the counselling and admission process for MBBS admission across the state. The directorate facilitates comprehensive medical and dental education via various medical, dental, and paramedical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Research is another area of focus for this directorate.

The counselling process is usually carried out in 4 rounds (round 1, round 2, mop-up, and spot round). Spot round is conducted only if seats remain vacant after the first 3 rounds. Each round of counselling is a separate round, and the rules of each round are different. Once any round commences, the rules of that round will apply to all the candidates even if they are allotted/admitted in the previous rounds of counselling.

The top medical (MBBS) colleges include –

1. Banaras Hindu University

2. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science

3. King George`s Medical University

4. Aligarh Muslim University

The above list is based on last year's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF Rankings) (2022).

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) has been conducted by NTA since 2019 for admission to undergraduate medical education, with the approval of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and MHRD. This test is conducted once a year across India and abroad.
