Ahmedabad: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants in Gujarat, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an additional 247 MD/MS seats.

Even though the State Government and the GMERS colleges had requested 800 additional PG medical seats, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body, NMC, has approved only 247 seats in the State, Gujarat Samachar has reported.

Among these 247 newly approved MD/MS seats, 173 seats have been added to eight GMERS colleges, and altogether 100 seats have been added to six government medical colleges.

As per the latest media report by Gujarat Samachar, eight GMERS medical colleges located in Patan, Gandhinagar, Gotri, Himmatnagar, Junagadh, Sola-Ahmedabad, Vadnagar, and Valsad had collectively sought around 420 additional seats. However, they have received permission for only 173 additional MD/MS seats.

Six Government medical colleges in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar had requested the NMC's permission for more than 400 additional PG medical seats. However, they were granted permission for fewer than 100 additional seats.

With NMC permission granted for only 247 seats across 14 government and semi-government colleges, the Gujarat Health Department has issued directions to all deans to file formal appeals before the Apex Medical Commission. Already, the medical colleges have submitted the appeals by paying Rs 50,000 per subject.

Meanwhile, NMC recently released a list of newly sanctioned PG medical seats and increases across private deemed universities in India for the academic year 2025-26. According to the official public notice, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has stated that the update follows the approval of new and increased PG seats in various medical colleges across the country.

In its notice, the NMC said, “In continuation of the approval granted for PG Medical Seats for Broad Speciality courses (BS) in Govt. Medical Colleges for AY 2025-26, a list of approved seats for both PG Increase & New of Pvt. Deemed Universities for AY 2025-26 are attached for the information of all stakeholders. The LOPs for these sanctioned PG seats for AY 2025-26 will be issued shortly. The counselling authorities need not wait for the LOPs from institutions to include them in the counselling process. This list, uploaded on the website, shall be considered as a valid document for the counselling process."

As per the updated PG (BS) seat matrix, a total of 966 PG seats have been approved for Broad Specialist for AY 2025-26, a total of 1980 seats were the existing seats, and a total of 1765 seats were requested.
